REXBURG, Idaho – A dance off between two high school mascots turned ugly Tuesday when shoving devolved into a student brawl during a basketball game in Rexburg.
Police were forced to intervene in a student brawl that broke out during a mascot dance off at the 5A District 5-6 championship game between Rexburg’s Madison Bobcats and the Highland Rams, of Pocatello, The Idaho State Journal reports.

Between the third and fourth quarters, the Madison mascot was amping up the crowd when the Highland ram approached from behind, mocking the routine. The Madison mascot gave the ram a one-armed shove, and the ram shoved back before walking away. The reaction prompted Madison students to spill from the stands to go after the ram, with one student shoving the mascot to the ground, Deadspin reports.
The altercation then drew Highland students to the gym floor, one of which attempted to tackle the Madison student who shoved the ram, but failed. Students from both schools then went after each other as police quickly quelled the commotion.

Nobody was hurt in the melee. It’s unclear whether students will face disciplinary action for their involvement, according to the East Idaho News.
Madison coach Bill Hawkins told the Post Register it was a “great game.”
Madison’s win means the team captured the district title and will move on to play Rocky Mountain high school in the state tournament.
The mascot brawl sparked an online brawl between commenters about who was at fault in the ordeal.
“The Madison mascot should not have put his hands on the Highland mascot and pushed him,” Bobi Dixon posted to Facebook. “Aren’t they taught better ways to handle a situation?”
“First, the ram was in his personal space, and I’d like to point out that the ram shoved him back,” Rachel Rowe replied. “The Highland mascot should not have put his hands on the Madison mascot and pushed him. Aren’t they taught better ways to handle a situation?”
McKell Marlor contends the Madison mascot is a brother.
“If a random stranger was rubbing up on you, you would push them to get them off you as well,” Marlor posted. “My little brother handled himself with complete class in this situation. The Highland mascot had to right to come over, he’s the center of the problem.”
“Despite that the ram went to Madison’s side, Madison’s mascot pushed first. The first push is what started the uncalled for reaction by the Madison fans. Without the first push nothing would have happened. The Madison fan that pushed the ram should be suspended,” Dan Huff added.
