SAN ANTONIO – Jed Aurelio thought it would be “so cute” to ask his date to prom after a school assembly with a huge banner, flowers and balloons inside a Karen Wagner High School hall.

promposalThe senior, and his friends who helped him pull off the elaborate promposal, are now serving three day suspensions and school officials may ban Aurelio from participating in the traditional school dance, KENS 5 reports.

“I thought they were going to think it was so cute,” Aurelio said.

“It hurts me because I tried to surprise her to make her happy,” he said. “And not being able to go to prom would be so pointless of me doing all of this.”

Promposals – fancy ways to ask a date to a high school prom – are the new thing, and NationalDayCalender.com marks today as “National Promposal Day.” It’s also apparently “National Worship of Tools Day,” “National Oatmeal Nut Waffles Day,” and “National Johnny Appleseed Day,” according to the website.

Aurelio offered his promposal Tuesday in the Judson Independent School District, where the teen and his friends set up massive banners in Wagner High School hall and tossed balloons from a balcony. Aurelio also surprised his date with flowers in the recorded stunt that sent studentents, who whooped and hollered as school officials attempted to regain control.

“We’ve got to have some sense of order in a school,” district spokesman Steve Linscomb told KENS 5. “We understand the social aspect of the prom. And we know it means an awful lot to these students. We get that. But you can’t do it to the point where it becomes a Hollywood production and you’ve got this big disruption going on.”

Linscomb said Aurelio was suspended because he was told not to put up the huge banner, and did it anyway, but he will be allowed to attend prom.

In a recent Florida promposal, popular Park Vista High School cheerleader Mikhal Bartosik asked her special education friend Johnathan to prom with icing on a large cookie in a video posted to YouTube, Lifezette.com reports.

Another promposal video gone viral between a Michigan teen and her special needs friend took place at a school assembly, where the girl presented her date with a large box with a message that said “I’ll ask you to prom when pigs fly!”

When the boy opened the box balloons decorated as pigs drifted to the rafters, and the wheelchair-bound student was spun around to reveal a line of girls in the bleachers wearing t-shirts with the message “Prom?” the Detroit Free Press reports.

Other popular promposals this year have included a girl’s request to New York Knicks rookie Kistaps Porzingis and his video response, a massive prom invite spelled out in an Omaha park, and a Chick-fil-A “Will you be my Chick to prom?” surprise in Atlanta.
