SAN DIEGO – A San Diego math teacher caught on student cell phone video browsing lingerie while his screen was unwittingly broadcast through the classroom projector was suspended by school officials Tuesday.

Mira Mesa High School math teacher and girls track coach Paul Swanson was recorded by students during a recent test as he rested, hand on cheek, behind a podium, seemingly engrossed in his computer. In videos posted online, Swanson appeared oblivious to the fact that his computer was still plugged into a classroom projector, and broadcasting lingerie ads the teacher was browsing on eBay.

Reddit user D3Gamma was in the class when the incident occurred last week and posted a five second video clip titled “Uh Oh! Forgot to turn off the projector?” on Saturday. Another student recorded “more than a minute of video showing his teacher viewing page after page of lingerie online,” NBC San Diego reports.

Several European news sites quickly picked up on the post and the Mirror questioned D3Gamma about it on Reddit.

“He never found out,” D3Gamma wrote. “After this class ended he switched to the next class’ assignments. So he doesn’t know it wasn’t turned off or ‘frozen on a screen.’”

D3Gamma did not identify the teacher, or the school, but said “he’s not the best at teaching to say the least.”

“I think it’s better for the teacher to not have realized that it was on,” D3Gamma wrote. “If he did find out mid class he would have been extremely embarrassed. Right now he thinks no one knows.”

On Tuesday, Principal Jeff Sabins made sure everyone, including Swanson, knew about the incident by sending a letter home to parents, Fox 5 reports.

San Diego Unified School District spokesman Linda Zintz told NBC San Diego the teacher “was placed on leave while the incident is being looked into.

“Since this is a personnel issue, the district can’t provide details at this time,” she said.

The school email to parents also did not provide any specifics about the incident.

Parents, of course, weren’t very impressed to learn about the teacher’s school time computer browsing habits.

“If the kids can’t be on their phones surfing the Internet then he shouldn’t be doing that,” said Elaine Teodor, mother of a Mira Mesa junior. “We’re paying him to teach our kids and he needs to be focused on that but then again, he has to live with everyone making a judgement about what he’s doing.”

“He never even looked up, it’s not even just the fact of what he did, but what is he doing in class? He’s sitting there doing nothing,” parent Catherine Castillo told ABC 10. “”The complete lack awareness of what’s going on in his classroom, if nothing else, is ridiculous.”

Students agreed, but said they don’t believe their teacher should lose his job.

“It shouldn’t have been happening with minors, he should know better,” said a student who did not want to be identified. “That being said, there was no nudity or anything, it was just lingerie. I don’t support it, but I don’t think he should lose his job.”
