MESA, Ariz. – Two Mesa police officers were taken to the hospital after a fight with two students that forced a lockdown at a local charter school.

sunvalleyschoolSchool officials told ABC 15 one of the officers deployed a Taser on a student during the scuffle, but it didn’t work.

A Sun Valley High School principal broke up an argument between students and escorted a male student to the office after the ordeal. That’s where police allege the student became angry and started to fight with a school resource officer.

“The student continued to get agitated to the point where the fight started,” Mesa Police Det. Steve Berry told 12 News.

The scuffle prompted the student’s younger brother, also a Sun Valley High School student who happened to be in the school office, to join in the scuffle.

“He saw the fight and decided to join in,” Berry said.

Student Malcom Lara told 12 News the boys “were hitting him and everything.

“The cop was on the ground getting beat up,” Lara said.

Police said the officer attempted to shoot the boys with his Taser, but was unsuccessful. School officials put the school on lockdown as another officer arrived to help stop the melee, but the fight continued to escalate, ABC 15 reports.

“The kid that was Tased said, ‘I told you not to f*** with me,’ and then boom, right in the face,” student Daniel Gonzales said.

“Teachers were like, ‘go to class, go to class’ and started pushing everyone away,” he said.

Several more officers eventually arrived to break up the brawl.

School officials initially reported no major injuries from the scuffle, but a Mesa Police Union spokesman told 12 News one of the officers received substantial trauma to his head in the scuffle.

“The officer had staples put in his head to close a significant laceration, one of his eyes is swollen shut and he is also undergoing concussion protocol,” according to the news site.

“Apparently one of the students had some sort of class ring on when he was punching him.”

The teen brothers were arrested at the school and are expected to face aggravated assault charges. Mesa Police did not reveal what, exactly, prompted the fight, which was contained to the school office.

“Two teenage brothers – BOTH in the principal’s office and duking it out with the cops,” Michael Ricci posted in the ABC 15 comments. “Oh, their parents must be so proud.”
