ANTIOCH, Calif. – A substitute teacher is out of a job and his employer is re-evaluating its hiring practices after the teacher went off the rails in a tirade against students caught on video and sent to the media.
The teacher, who was not identified in news reports, allegedly lost his mind over a box of missing rubber bands in a sixth grade classroom at Antioch Middle School last week, and a school employee sent a video of the incident to KRON.

The tipster also sent along a note that said “teachers are frustrated by a lack of discipline in the school and perhaps that is why this teacher lost his cool.”
In the short video, the teacher is screaming at a student: “God damn, get them out of the trash can and put them in my hand.
“I don’t have any,” a student yelled back.
“Where are they?” the teacher screamed in response.
“I don’t know!” the student said.
The teacher wasn’t buying it.

“You said you put them somewhere, then go. … They’re magic? They disappeared?” the teacher said in a yell as he fetched a garbage can from the corner of the classroom.
“Go through the garbage and put them in my hand,” he continued. “Go through the garbage. Dig through the garbage, now! And put them in my hand.”
“Where are they?” the teacher said, pacing and waiving his hands in frustration.
The student insisted she didn’t know what happened to the precious rubber bands.
“You better find out. You better find them,” the teacher continued. “You are going to dig through the trash until you find them. Now! Now!”
“Dig! Now! Dig now!” the teacher demanded. “Find them! Now!”
Several students apparently had no idea what the teacher’s tantrum was all about.
“What is he looking for?” one student said in the video.
The incident occurred Monday and KRON broadcast the video Tuesday, prompting mixed reactions from parents and observers online.
Also Tuesday, school officials issued a statement about the substitute teacher’s conduct, SFist.com reports.
“Late yesterday, administration at Antioch Middle School learned that a substitute teacher had lost his temper with students in a sixth grade classroom. Staff took immediate and decisive steps to ensure that the substitute was removed from the classroom and campus,” the statement read.
“Police were immediately notified and students in the classroom will receive counseling as needed. The actions of this individual in no way reflect the values of our schools or our District. We take all instances of student safety seriously and will ensure that appropriate and conclusive steps are taken as determined by the outcome of the investigation.”
KRON reports it’s possible students were wearing the rubber bands as bracelets, but school board vice president Walter Ruehlig said “that does not give any teacher the excuse to go ballistic.”
“Nothing out of the ordinary was done by the kids,” he said. “I was actually marveled that the composure of the kids that they…put up with the very erratic behavior, which is inexcusable.”
Some parents seemed to agree.
“You can’t treat the students like that,” parent Amalia Garcia said. “He has to be professional for his job.”
Ruehlig said district officials are now reviewing their process for vetting substitute teachers, who earn about $125 a day, according to SFist.
Others who commented on Facebook didn’t seem surprised by the teacher’s outburst, and relayed their own stories of out of control middle school students.
“Driving by the school everyday when the kids are let out is sometimes scary. I have had bottles thrown at my car. (Even caught them and principal did nothing),” Heather Mau Duarte wrote. “The fights are crazy. And one day my husband had to get out of car to get kids away from an older lady. They had her car surrounded harassing her. She was traumatized.”
“I’ve worked with middle school (students) and let me tell you, though I didn’t go crazy I too have been close to loosing it with this new generation of middle schoolers that have no respect for authority,” Vanessa Valenzuela posted. “There are many factors why children this age are defiant starting with their family upbringing.”
“I’m surprised we don’t see more of this kind of thing, most kids are out of control now and have no respect for anything or anyone!” Scott Thompson added.
