JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Duval County School Board candidate Ricky King has bowed out of the race, after news broke he allegedly solicited a bikini picture from a 16-year-old former student.
The mother of a San Jose Prep student told police her daughter received inappropriate text messages from King, 25, when he was the girl’s teacher last November and she only recently learned about them, WJXT reports.

One of the texts asked the girl to send a picture in a bikini, and the principal confirmed to the girl’s mother that they came from King’s phone. King is currently the executive director of Heart Glu Foundation, a nonprofit that works with students in Duval County Public Schools, and until recently was running for the District 7 seat on the school board, according to the news site.
The student’s mother who reported the incident said her daughter claims other girls sent pictures of themselves to King and met up with him after school. She told WJXT she was outraged when she learned he was running for the school board.
King dropped out of the race this week when news of his alleged texting habits surfaced.
“I didn’t find that out until probably a month and a half ago, but obviously the last place he needs to be is anywhere where small children are,” she said. “But I was extremely pleased to see he dropped out of the race for school board.”
Police reports detail at least two inappropriate text messages allegedly sent from King to the 16-year-old female student. Both texts asked the girl to send a picture in a bikini, with the second text also including “Cuz I miss dat a–,” WTLV reports.
Sheriff’s officials investigated the texts and ultimately concluded that no crimes were committed.

“It’s not being worked as a criminal incident,” Melissa Bujeda, spokeswoman for the Duval County Sheriff’s Office, told WTLV. “There are no elements of a crime with what has been reported.”
WJXT crime and safety analyst Gil Smith elaborated.
“That’s not illegal, and it’s not a violation of the law, even if it’s a minor,” Smith said of asking for a bikini picture. “This teacher is not in trouble with the law. He didn’t break any laws because he didn’t try to coerce this individual into sexual activity or even ask her for any sexual favors.”
Duval County school officials said King worked as a long-term substitute at San Jose Preparatory charter school last school year, before leaving for another opportunity at a different charter school. In an interview last week, King told WTLV he had worked as a substitute teacher at several local, and alleges on his Linked In profile to have taught in the district since 2011.
“King said his first teaching job was at Fletcher High, where he taught American government. Since then, he said, he has taught comprehensive law, an elective course, at Fletcher, Mandarin and Atlantic Coast high schools, he said,” according to the news site.
“Duval Schools spokeswoman Laureen Ricks said the district has no record of King being employed as a teacher at any district school.”
King denied sending the texts when confronted by WTLV.
“Two words,” he said, “not true.”
King told the news site that as executive director of the literacy advocacy group Heart Glu, he “mends the broken hearts of our students who feel they have no hope because of their lower socioeconomic status or grade level performance.”
