ELKHORN, Wis. – Eklhorn school officials are taking disciplinary action against “a small group” of students who allegedly taunted a Beloit girls soccer team with references to Donald Trump’s vow to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Beloit Memorial High School girls soccer coach Brian Denu told WISC several elementary aged students who attended a game Thursday at Elkhorn High School taunted minority players with phrases like “Donald Trump, build that wall,” and it left his players in tears.

“I could just see the hurt and pain on their faces and know that this was obviously something that they hadn’t seen before,” he told the news site. “You know, it was from a small pocket of the Elkhorn fans, but those words are things you can’t take back.”

Some of the black and Latino students on Beloit’s team were so upset they couldn’t finish the game, he said.

“They came off the field and weren’t able to finish the game because they were too upset and distraught over what happened to them,” Denu told WISC. “One of the girls was cradled in the arms of one of our assistant coaches for a good 15 to 20 minutes.”

Beloit Memorial, which shares a team with Beloit Turner High School, lost the match to Elkhorn 5-0, and those who attended the game sounded off about the chants on Twitter.

“Ridiculous, racist treatment of some our athletes tonight by Elkhorn High School students. Reprehensible stuff. They should be ashamed,” Beloit Daily News reporter Josh Flickinger posted.

StatelineSportsHub.com also covered the incident, as well as the official responses from the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association and both school districts.

“We are working with our member schools to investigate the information that was provided,” WIAA Associate Director Deb Hauser wrote in an email.

Jason Tadlock, Elkhorn superintendent of schools, said district officials are also investigating.

“Our athletic director has been in contact with Beloit Memorial’s athletic director. We have been and are continuing to investigate the allegation and will address the matter with the students responsible,” he said in a statement Friday.

“Any unsportsmanlike chants, or remarks are unacceptable and not representative of our expectations of our students. We sincerely regret and apologize for any comments/shouts that were made at last night’s game that are not in line with our values. We are also modifying our supervision plan to assure this does not happen in the future.”

A district administrator told WISC the district has thus far confirmed some of the allegations.

“At this time we can confirm that three elementary aged students who were sitting near Beloit fans said ‘Trump, build a wall.’ Later in the game two high school students state back and forth ‘Trump’ four or five times.”

And while Elkhorn district officials and coaches apologized for the Trump related comments from fans, folks like Flickinger continue to fan the flames.

“I’m glad @EAHSElks apologized, but those girls will never forget how they were treated last night,” Flickinger tweeted Friday. “Not good enough.”

WISC noted that the allegedly racist chants are the latest in what’s becoming a trend at high school sporting events.

“Students in Indiana and Iowa have recently been admonished for similar chants at high school games in apparent support of the Republican presidential candidate’s campaign promise to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border to prevent immigrants from entering the country illegally,” the news site reports.
