DUMFRIES, Va. – Prince William County police recently arrested Graham Park Middle School student Ryan Turk for stealing a free carton of milk from the school cafeteria.
“This is ridiculous. This is beyond embarrassing,” the boy’s mother, Shamise Turk told KMOV. “He’s at home over 65 cents.”

Turk said school officials suspended her son May 10 for allegedly stealing a carton of milk from the lunch line, becoming disrespectful afterwards, and for using his cell phone.
Ryan Turk qualifies for the federally subsidized free lunch program, but apparently forgot his milk and went back to retrieve it. That’s when a Prince William County police officer allegedly accused Turk of stealing the milk, and the situation devolved from there, WTVR reports.
“I yanked away from him and told him to get off me because he’s not my dad,” Turk told WJLA.
School officials contend the teen became disorderly, so the officer placed him in handcuffs and hauled him to the principal’s office to search him for drugs, Shamise Turk said.
The drug search, which came up empty, was “because he was fidgety, kept pulling on the strings of his pants, and laughing when we were trying to talk to him and just wouldn’t talk,” she said.
School officials suspended Turk, and police ultimately charged him with larceny for stealing the free milk, alleging he attempted to “conceal” the carton, Shamise Turk said.

Prince William County Schools issued a prepared statement about the procedures for student discipline, but did not address Turk’s arrest specifically.
“The need for disciplinary action is determined by how a student behaves throughout any given incident,” the statement read. “An appeals process is in place to ensure the fairness of any disciplinary action.”
Shortly after the incident, Shamise Turk received notice that her son is expected in juvenile court to face the larceny charge.
“I’m angry, I’m frustrated, I’m mad,” she said. “It just went too far. They are charging him with larceny, which I don’t have no understanding as to why he is being charged with larceny when he was entitled to that milk from the beginning,” she said.
Several folks who commented online were also outraged by the incident, but not for the same reasons as the Turks.
“As a parent I would have been so humiliated at his behavior (using cell phone at school is against the rules, taking what he wants without following rules) – he would have suffered the consequences at home,” Kenneth86 posted to the NBC 29 comments. “And I must say – a cell phone and living in what appears to be … a very nice neighborhood and getting free lunch – really?”
“How can Shamise provide a cell phone for her child but depends on taxpayers to feed him?” Onion questioned.
“Mom is outraged, when she should be embarrassed. Kid is arrogant when he should have manners,” independentjoe added. “Police are wrong for enforcing the law. Welcome to the brave new world of our ‘entitlement’ society. ‘I don’t have no understanding as to why he is being charged with larceny’ says it all. Parenting FAIL!”
Others condemned how school officials handled the situation.
“This is absolutely ridiculious. Police need to be more aware,” Krista Jenkins posted to KMOV. “Of course the child pulled away. He was judged for a common reaction from what would have caused him to be emotionally traumatized and profiled.”
“Shouldn’t be charged with larceny, but disciplined for being disrespectful,” David Swift wrote. “I’ve always told my kids whether they were right or wrong just say yes sir, ma’am be respectful and I will take care of the problem.”
