TEMPLE TERRACE, Fla. – A Florida fifth-grader could face attempted murder charges after students allege she kept a hit list and police believe she spiked her classmates’ water bottle with bleach.

Police believe a fifth-grade girl at Lewis Elementary School in Temple Terrace planned to kill a classmate on May 13 by pouring bleach into the student’s water bottle. A student told a teacher that day that her water tasted funny, and the teacher told the girl to throw it away, WFLA reports.

Days later, another student told the victim his classmate pour bleach into her water, according to WTSP.

The victim’s mother contends investigators told her the student involved specifically planned the attempted poisoning for Friday the 13th, and the girl kept a “kill list” in a notebook.

Another unidentified student confirmed the claim to WTSP, and said his name is on the list.

School officials contacted parents about the alleged poisoning, but withheld all details about the incident.

In an automated phone message to parents, Lewis Elementary Principal Delilah Raberio said “we were made aware of an alleged threat against students at our school.

“We immediately contacted law enforcement. Temple Terrace police and the State Attorney’s Office are handling the situation. Our students and staff are all safe. I will update you as I receive more information.”

A police statement filled parents in on what was going on.

“On May 20, 2016, the Temple Terrace Police Department responded to Lewis Elementary School in reference to a report of a student threatening to harm other students. Police learned that a fifth-grade student had poured a substance, believed to be bleach, into another student’s water bottle on May 13,” the statement read.

“The student had taken a drink from the bottle, but did not have any ill effects at the time. Days later, a student gave information alleging a substance had been poured into the bottle.”

School officials contacted the suspected student’s parents, and the girl was removed from the school during the ongoing investigation.

“The police report shows if the state attorney moves forward with the case, the young accused mastermind could face charges of premeditated attempted murder or manslaughter, criminal conspiracy, and poisoning with the intent to kill or injure,” WTSP reports.

“That’s jail time as an adult,” parent Ashley Brown said, “because that’s an adult move.”

“That could have ended in something terrible,” she said. “That’s crazy. That’s scary.”

Other parents like Joe Shaughnessy, who has three children at Lewis Elementary, did not appreciate school officials leaving parents in the dark about what occurred.

“Now that I’m getting the information I’m getting, I feel they could have been a little more transparent about the situation, more than a vague voice mail or text message,” Shaughnessy told WFLA.

The victim’s mother also told the news site the school’s nurse called to check on her daughter before she learned what happened, but would not reveal why she was inquiring.

The mother said she believes the alleged perpetrator needs help, but should also face criminal charges.

“If a kid is intending to kill their classmate, that’s criminal,” the mother told WFLA.
