GREENLEYS, England – There are obviously a lot of parents – regardless of income – who are more than happy to abdicate their responsibilities to government.
In U.S. public schools, particularly in lower-income neighborhoods, government-sponsored “wraparound” services have become fashionable, to provide extra meals, non-academic child care, basic health care and other necessities for children whose parents cannot, or will not, take care of those things themselves.

How long will it be before those types of “raise your child for you” services are offered at more prosperous American schools? After all, irresponsible parenting is not defined by income level.
A troubling hint may come from Mary Magdalene Catholic Primary School in Greenleys, England, which has been rated as “outstanding.”
School administrators have decided to ban all home-packed lunches for children between the ages of four and seven after seeing kids bring all sorts of unhealthy meals – most notably lunches comprised of cold McDonalds food, according to a report from Mirror.co.uk.
From now on all children in that age group must eat lunches served by the school.
“Many children bring unacceptable packed lunches,” Headteacher Rosemarie Jones said in a letter to parents, according to the news report. “For example two chocolate bars and a yoghurt or cold chips and sausage or a packet of biscuits and crisps.
“We’ve even seen children with a cold McDonald’s meal in their lunchbox. How can this be healthy? We have done this for very positive reasons because it is better for the children’s health to have a nutritious meal.

“And, of course, it is free, saving parents £485 a year.”
In the UK, children between the ages of four and seven qualify for free government-funded lunches, regardless of family income, according to Mirror.co.uk. That’s right. Prince William and his wife could presumably sign their little son up for free school lunches, courtesy of taxpayers, if they chose to do so.
A couple of parents complained about the new rule at the school, according to the news report, but there didn’t seem to be any sort of widespread protest.
Why would there be? If people can save a few dollars and a few headaches by allowing the government to care for their kids, all the better…right?
