CLINTON, La. – A Louisiana elementary student helped save her mother from a fugitive captor by forwarding the woman’s handwritten note pleading for help to school officials.

The 11-year-old East Feliciana Middle School student on Tuesday shared a handwritten note from her mother dated last Friday that made it clear she was being held against her will, and pleaded for someone to contact police, WBRZ reports.

School officials did exactly that, and the young girl guided East Feliciana Parish Sheriff Jeff Travis and several other officers to a trailer in a rural area off Folly Brown Road, where there initially was no response, according to Fox 8.

“It was very concerning at first, understanding that we potentially had a hostage situation,” Travis said. “She needed someone to get her out of the situation and she couldn’t talk on the phone.”

Travis realized the suspected captor was wanted felon Donald Ray Guy, a career criminal with a history of eluding law enforcement. The sheriff secured a search warrant for the home and “found Donald Ray Guy hiding in a closet,” Travis said.

The girl’s mother, as well of two of Guy’s relatives, were also inside, the Daily Mail reports.

Guy, 27, was already wanted after missing repeated court dates for domestic abuse and battery charges in East Feliciana Parish. He’s also wanted in connect to a car theft in East Baton Rouge Parish, WBRZ reports.

Guy was arrested for false imprisonment and domestic abuse battery.

Deputies found a stolen ATV on the property as well other suspicious items, which could result in additional charges.

Neither the woman nor the child were injured in the incident.

Both Travis and commenters online praised the mother for finding a creative way of alerting police to her plight.

“Smarting thinking on behalf of the mother,” asiliveandbreathe posted to the WBRZ comments.

Others condemned the legal system that allowed Guy to avoid responsibility for his actions and continue his criminal ways.

“This woman needs to arm herself,” Sandy Reese wrote on Fox 8’s Facebook page. “You know our legal system will bail him out again. He will go back to his evil ways.”

“And now that this woman has made it aware what the perp did, she will have to watch her back until the perp dies,” JC wrote. “She needs to realize what really matters in her life.”

“I hope they lock up this lowlife for good now. How many charges does it take before they keep him off the streets for good?” AmericanBlood posted to the Daily Mail. “Charge his family members who helped him keep this woman locked away as they had to have known all along what he was doing. No plea deals!”
