GLOUCESTER, Mass. – Gloucester High School officials suspended a dozen student athletes over a brawl with rivals at Danvers High School over the weekend, including some for fighting and others for consuming alcohol.

Five Gloucester students “most directly involved” in the melee in a parking lot near Gloucester High School’s Newell Stadium Saturday night received indefinite suspensions from school, and were also banned from a quarter of their athletic games next season, superintendent Richard Safier told the Gloucester Times.

Seven other students at the scene who were busted with alcohol violated Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association rules and will also be suspended from a quarter of their games next season, but will not be suspended from school, he said.

“These kinds of situations are deeply regrettable,” Safier said. “It’s a disappointment as educators that such things have happened and it’s disappointing that the community has to feel the burden of this kind of publicity. But we will seek to make this as much of an educational opportunity (through the disciplinary measures) as possible.”

Police are not pursuing criminal charges against any of the students involved, WCVB reports.

Danvers superintendent Lisa Dana refused to discuss the situation.

“As with any investigation, we are unable to comment,” she said.

There were no reported injuries from the fight, which took place two days after the schools’ annual Thanksgiving Day game in Danvers, which Danvers won 41-27, the Times reports.

Gloucester High School is known as the “Home of the fighting fishermen.”

School officials would not discuss what sports the students played, but said all will serve out their suspensions, which means they’re not seniors playing only fall sports. All of the students were 17 years old or younger, Gloucester Police Chief John McCarthy told the Times.

“Gloucester’s hockey, basketball, wrestling and indoor track teams all begin their winter season within the next two weeks,” according to the news site.

The fight was the second time this year that Gloucester school officials suspended students for fighting with students at other schools.

In March, seven Gloucester High students were suspended after a fight with Tewksbury Memorial High School the night after a hockey tournament game. None of the students from that fight were involved in the more recent brawl.

“There were no repeat offenders,” Safier said.

“Either way, it cuts the wrong way,” he said. “This just means we’ve had more kids involved in this kind of behavior. It’s wrong, and it’s unfortunate for all.”
