PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Fifth-graders at Reservoir Avenue Elementary School recently told about a classroom experience in which they were discussing the word “raid” in reading class. Naturally, that led to a discussion of war. That, naturally, led to the reading of an editorial published by the far-left magazine The Nation.

That’s the way it works in government schools these days.

The students wondered why we are “we still at war even after Osama Bin Laden has been killed.” The school’s principal, Socorro Gomez-Potter, dutifully told the students about The Nation and how its writers asked “a similar question” in the magazine.
Naturally, that called for a discussion – in the principal’s office – of a Nation editorial. The students then wrote to The Nation:
“We discovered that the Bush administration started a war on terror that is infinite. This could potentially cause devastation in many different countries. We agreed with your suggestions to President Obama on how to take a step on closing the “dark chapter” that this war created. We think we should reduce US forces in Afghanistan and increase positive communication between everyone.
“While we were working on this letter we found out that President Obama followed many of your suggestions in your editorial. On May 1 President Obama went to Afghanistan and personally addressed our troops. It seems President Obama took advantage of the opportunity, as stated in your editorial, to take a step to close the “dark chapter in American history.” He will reduce US forces and begin Peace Talks.
“In conclusion, we would like to thank you for writing this editorial and challenging us to discover more about our current events. We hope that more people take your advice and increase positive communication globally to solve conflicts.”
How sweet. The moment provided Ms. Gomez-Potter a primo opportunity to convince her students to share her very skewed views on American foreign policy.
According to her Facebook page, not only is Ms. Gomez-Potter a fan of The Nation, but she also likes Che Guevara, The Rachel Maddow Show, the Democratic Party and Michelle Obama. And she obviously wants her students to like them, too.

Great Schools rates Reservoir Avenue Elementary School “5 out of 10.” Perhaps if the principal focused a little more on the basics and a little less on left-wing political indoctrination, students might learn more fundamentals and the school might achieve a better grade. But what’s the point of that when a Che-loving principal can turn her students on to publications like The Nation?
