LAS VEGAS – Fights broke out between students at Desert Oasis High School in Las Vegas last week, and some claim it’s tied to a new dress code policy.

“Everybody is so mad about the dress code,” student Niyah Rheed told KTNV. “No leggings, no jogging pants, no sweat pants, no flip-flops, no holes in your pants, none of that.”

Students allege at least seven fights broke out at the same time on Thursday after the school’s principal made an announcement about the changes and offered students an opportunity to express their thoughts to the student council.

Some students recorded the melee on their cell phones and forwarded the footage to KTNV. The video shows numerous girls grabbing hair and hitting each other as school officials scrambled to break up the fights.

“In the video, you can see students tackling other students to the ground. In one of the videos, girls had their shirts ripped off,” according to the news site.

“I was in shock,” junior Adam Gallegos said. “I’ve never seen this stuff before in my entire life.”

The fights started in the school’s cafeteria before spilling out into the hallway. Some students also used their lunches as a weapon.

“There was a bunch of people just hitting each other,” Gallegos said. “There was food flying everywhere. There was apples flying.”

Gallegos’ brother, Zachary, also witnessed the mayhem.

“I walked up and there was just people all over the ground, security guards trying to break it up,” he said. “It’s probably the craziest thing I’ve ever seen.”

“The dress code wasn’t a great dress code, but I don’t think you should fight over it,” he said.

Gallegos’ father, Nick, said he doesn’t agree with the dress code, but condemned the reaction from students.

“That was something that caught my attention, too, that was crazy,” he said of the brawls. “You don’t need to create violence to get your point across, there’s other ways of doing it.”

Ironically, the school’s motto is “Strike at Every Opportunity.”

Two students were ultimately arrested for fighting, and six others were also cited for causing a disturbance, though no injuries were reported from the incident.

The incident, of course, isn’t the first time students have rebelled against dress code changes.

In Duncanville, Texas, more than 150 Duncanville High School students were suspended in one day for violating the school’s very strict dress code in 2014. The same day a massive food fight escalated into what students described as a riot with trash cans thrown across the cafeteria and other madness, the Dallas Morning News reported at the time.

No students were arrested in that incident, but school officials later relaxed the dress code to appease the rioting students, according to NBC DFW.
