GAINESVILLE, Fla. – It’s about a 1 hour and 45-minute drive between Gainesville, Florida, and Orlando.
So how can the Alachua County School District, which is based in Gainesville, run up a big hotel tab in Orlando?

In fiscal year 2016-17, the Alachua district had 85 separate transactions at Orlando hotels – at places like Disney resorts, the Hyatt Regency, the Rosen Centre and the Florida Hotel and Convention Center – for a total of $35,662.96. That averages out to about $419 per transaction.
Alachua staff and students probably had a lot of legitimate business in Orlando. There were probably meetings and conferences for school employees and sports events and other activities for kids.
But did so many of them have to spend the night so much, when home was such a short drive away?
The charges at the Orlando hotels were a big chunk of the Alachua district’s total hotel tab for fiscal 2016-17 — 373 transactions for $127,826,99.
That’s a lot of money for a district with money issues. The Alachua County district spent about $5 million more than it collected in revenue in 2016-17, despite a three percent increase in state aid, according to a news report from WCJB.com.
District personnel had a lot of pretty expensive stays in places other than Orlando.
