A Los Angeles mother is demanding answers after she claims her son was humiliated by his teacher at Manhattan Place Elementary when he was forced to pee in a trash can in front of his classmates.

Sonia Mongol was in tears at a news conference in front of the school this week, when she described how her 8-year-old son’s teacher handled the child’s request to use the restroom during class in November, KCAL reports.

The teacher initially denied the request, she said, then offered the boy another option when he asked a second time.

“Made him urinate in a trash can located at the front of a classroom, exposing himself in front of all of the other students, urinating on himself in the process,” Mongol said, adding that the boy “went to the nurse’s office” but “received no help.”

Instead, school officials gave the child a trash bag and told him to cover his fouled clothes. They didn’t bother to call Mongol, she said, leaving the boy to marinate in his own urine and shame for the rest of the school day.

Mongol contends her son is now ridiculed by his classmates and his teacher continues to deny the boy access to the school’s bathroom. She gathered in front of the school to demand answers from school officials, who locked the group out of the front office.

“Why would you make a child expose himself in front of the classroom and then put a garbage bag over him when he came to you for help? Why would you treat a child that way?” Mongol questioned. “He’s a kid.”

The mother told the media she staged the press conference after Principal Evelyn Samos ignored the allegation. Her next stop is the school board for the Los Angeles Unified School District, she said.

“New restroom laws need to be put into place. Children should be able to go to the restroom whenever they have to go,” Mongol said.

“My child did not deserve this. No child deserves to be treated this way,” she said. “We are outraged, but this will be used not just to make conditions better for our child but for all children.”

KABC reports the school employee who put the trash bag on Mongol’s son no longer works at the school.

LAUSD officials told the news site the incident could constitute child abuse, and an investigation is underway.

“Los Angeles Unified takes all matters concerning the safety and well-being of our student very seriously. Upon learning about this allegation, law enforcement was notified immediately, and the District is fully cooperating in the investigation,” the district officials wrote in a prepared statement.

“The District will also conduct an administrative investigation,” it read. “Due to confidentiality laws, we cannot offer further details at this time.”
