LINDEN, Texas – The audacity of some people is amazing.

Police in Linden, Texas arrested junior high teacher William Duncan Tuesday for allegedly selling methamphetamine to an undercover officer in the parking lot of his school – Mae Luster Stephens Junior High School, KSLA 12 News reports.

Police said the deal went down shortly before classes started Tuesday morning. After the buy, officers searched Duncan’s truck and allegedly found his drug stash. The teacher is charged with delivery of a controlled substance in a drug-free zone. Police told the television station the bust resulted from a five-month investigation into drug sales in the area.
“They were selling it all over the place. You’ve got to stop it,” Police Chief Alton McWaters told the station.
The investigation is ongoing, and it’s our hope there is no evidence discovered suggesting Duncan peddled meth to his students. That would be a tragedy.
Regardless, if he’s guilty, Duncan should never be allowed back on public school property, much less allowed to lead a classroom.
Teachers with such blatant disregard for the safety and well-being of their students are a disgrace to their profession. The unions that fight for cumbersome “due process” rights for these egregious offenders are no better.
Improving teacher quality will require every state to consider ways to cut back bureaucratic red tape and union rules that slow the process of removing teachers like Duncan from the classroom – and district payroll – as quickly as possible.
