ADELANTO, Calif. – Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers union, is a liar.

California mom and education reformer Doreen Diaz said so in a recent blog post for the Washington Examiner. She alleges Weingarten is putting words in the mouths of parents fighting to transform their children’s ailing public school.

She wants Weingarten to apologize, Colorlines.com reports.

The dispute stems from Weingarten’s attempt to discredit the new education reform film Won’t Back Down, which publicizes the “parent trigger” process and casts a critical eye on teachers unions that fight to keep students trapped in failing government schools.

Weingarten suggested that parents at Desert Trails Elementary – a real-life failing school that Diaz and others have tried to transform into a charter school – are stooges for corporate interests.

According to Diaz, Weingarten claims “many (Desert Trails) parents report feeling deceived by the for-profit charter-backed organizers who came to gather petitions. They actually sued to take their signatures back when they found out they were being used to give their school away to a charter company.”

Diaz says Weingarten is a liar, and called her out in her blog for the Examiner.

“Randi Weingarten knows better. The parents of Desert Trails launched our effort. We were the ones who collected those signatures, not some imaginary for-profit company. We also specifically rejected for-profit transformation proposals. The charter was our last option when the school district refused to hear our concerns. We’re offended she would insinuate we are manipulated by outside interests, when our only interest is our children.”

That’s certainly more than we can say for Weingarten, whose union members are willing to walk out on students to squeeze more money out of cash-strapped school districts like Chicago, and have fought tooth and nail to block meaningful education reforms that might threaten union power and influence.

Won’t Back Down
exposes the teachers union racket for what it is, and serves as an empowering message to parents who want to reclaim public schools. Parent Trigger laws have been implemented or discussed in numerous states since the concept was first conceived in California, and if parents start to take advantage of their rights it could spell doom for Weingarten’s AFT.

That’s the real reason union bosses like Weingarten will say or do anything to discredit the parent trigger process, or movies that bring attention to it.

But we’re encouraged that parents like Diaz aren’t going to take Weingarten’s baloney lying down, and will bark back if necessary to set the record straight.
