NORFOLK, Va. – Forty-niners backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s distaste for the National Anthem is rubbing off on highschoolers.
The majority of Maury High School’s varsity squad took a knee during the National Anthem during a game against Grassfield High School at Powhatan Field on Friday, The Virginia Pilot reports.

A photo of the display posted online shows all but about a half-dozen on their knees as they lined up along the end zone.
“Our school system has said, we’re of the belief, we let our guys do what they believe in,” Maury coach Chris Fraser, who stood during the anthem along with a few players, told the news site. “And so we didn’t make an issue of it, and if they believe in a cause, that’s fine.
“I stand behind what they believe in,” Fraser said, “but I’m going to do what I believe in.”

Maury players are the latest in an avalanche of sports players who are refusing to stand during the National Anthem as a means of showing support for the Black Lives Matter movement and highlighting the issue of police brutality.

Since the 49ers’ preseason game against the Green Bay Packers on Aug. 26, Kaepernick has refused to stand for the national anthem to protest police brutality and show support for the Black Lives Matter movement. Since that time, other players have joined his cause, including 49ers safety Eric Reid, Seattle Seahawks cornerback Jeremy Lane, and Denver Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall, among others.
The fallout resulted in some fans burning Kaepernick jerseys, while others, like rappers J Cole and Trey Songz, have taken to sporting his jersey at concerts.

Over the weekend, many NFL players linked arms, kneeled, or help up a fist to show solidarity with Kaepernick, SB Nation reports.
The movement has gained momentum in high schools, as well.
More than half a dozen students refused to stand for the National Anthem at Little Rock, Arkansas’ Hall High School during a visit by Governor Asa Hutchinson last Wednesday, Arkansas Matters reports.
All but two of the players and coaches for Woodrow Wilson High School’s football team in Camden, New Jersey also took a knee during the team’s season opener on Saturday, according to Philly.com.
But some students are also speaking out against the movement, including Woodrow Wilson defensive back Edwin Lopez, who was recruited to Rutgers.
Lopez told Philly.com his teammates “have the right to do what they want” but he believes love of country trumps a political statement.
“I’ve always stood for the National Anthem and I wasn’t going to let a little incident in the NFL change that,” he said. “That’s not me.”
Orlando Council, a black senior running back for the visiting Highland High School, was also disappointed by the opposing team’s protest.
“There are people out there every day risking their lives for us,” he said.
