WASHINGTON, D.C. – It looks like President Barack Obama has finally met a government program he doesn’t like.

CNSNews.com reports the president’s newly proposed 2015 budget eliminates funding for abstinence-only education. The $5 million that was earmarked for the program in the 2014 budget would be scrapped entirely, if the president gets his way.

According to CNN, “President Obama had eliminated funding for abstinence-only programs in his 2010 budget. But Congress restored some of the funding, most recently in its latest budget deal. More than $175 million is spent on other sex education programs.”

Valerie Huber, president of the National Abstinence Education Association, described the president’s decision as “unfortunate.” especially since “a growing body of research is showing the (abstinence program’s) effectiveness.”

Huber added that abstinence programs are supported “in large numbers” by both Republicans and Democrats.

“By eliminating the (sexual risk avoidance) abstinence programs in his budget, the president has, once again chosen to ignore the wishes of parents and the approach that helps youth avoid all risk associated with teen sex,” Huber said in a press release.

Patrick Fagan, who studies marriage and religion issues for the conservative Family Research Council, described chastity as “the foundational virtue of society.”

“If you want society to gradually fall apart, you will work to remove all connections between sexual intercourse and marriage,” Fagan told CNSNews.com

Critics of abstinence-only education, however, point to research that suggests the program doesn’t keep teenagers from engaging in sexual activity.

Who knows which side has the accurate research, but it seems commonsensical that explaining the benefits of abstinence to students in certainly worth the paltry $5 million government “investment.”
