GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – U.S. Rep. Justin Amash easily won his hotly contested Republican primary race on Tuesday, but the two-term congressman wasn’t ready to make nice with fellow Republicans who tried to torpedo his candidacy.

During his victory speech to supporters, Amash lashed out at former U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra who not only endorsed his opponent but also starred in a TV ad that mischaracterized Amash’s voting record.

“I want to say to lobbyist Pete Hoekstra, you’re a disgrace,” Amash said to loud cheers. “I’m glad we could hand you one more loss before you fade into total obscurity and irrelevance.”

Amash was referencing Hoekstra’s unsuccessful gubernatorial and Senate bids since leaving Congress in Jan. 2011.

Hoekstra served nine terms in Congress, representing the congressional district that neighbors Amash’s district. Hoekstra served as Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee from 2004 to 2007. The bad blood between Hoesktra and Amash comes from Amash’s full-throated criticism of the NSA domestic spying program.

Amash also blasted Brian Ellis, his GOP primary opponent, for running a slash-and-burn campaign.

“To Brian Ellis, you owe my family and this community an apology… for your disgusting, despicable, smear campaign,” Amash said toward the end of his victory speech, according to WOODTV.com. “You had the audacity to try to call me today after running a campaign that was called the nastiest in the country. I ran for office to stop people like you — to stop people who were more interested in themselves than in doing what’s best for their district.”

Amash didn’t back down from those comments in a subsequent interview with WOOD TV 8.

“(Ellis) ran a smear campaign. It was despicable. It was disgusting. And then he had the audacity to call me up and try to make nice. He’s what wrong with politics, people like him. And I stood up to these people. They lie, they smear, they distort, and then they think everything’s fine afterwards and it’s not fine,” Amash told the news station.

“The people want honest representatives, people with integrity. And I’ll continue to do that. I’ll fight for liberty, I’ll fight for the Constitution, and I’ll pay attention to the details of legislation, not just the bill title.”
