MERRIMACK, N.H. – A New Hampshire bus driver is facing criminal charges after she allowed her 5-year-old son to sit in the driver’s seat and he accidentally put the bus in reverse, and crashed into a building.

Bus camera footage shows Merrimack bus driver Tiffanie Brown was outside of the vehicle conducting a safety inspection at her apartment complex Thursday morning and had her 5- and 8-year-old sons with her, police Capt. Peter Albert told WMUR.com.

The video “show that the bus driver was in fact out of the bus going through the check of the bus’ lights,” Albert said. “Her 5-year-old was actually seated in the seat as she instructed him to activate the different lights to check them.”

Albert said the 8-year-old was hanging on a door when the younger child knocked the bus into reverse and the vehicle careened backwards, crashing into cars and a carport, according to the news site.

“It’s alarming, disturbing and alarming,” Albert said. “You would hope people would use more common sense than that, at the very least.”

No one was injured in the crash, but Brown was cited for reckless conduct and endangering the welfare of a child. She was arrested and released on a $2,500 personal recognizance bail, and is expected to be arraigned Jan. 27, the New Hampshire Union Leader reports.

Brown was employed by Provider Enterprises, Inc., a private bus contractor.

“As far as her employment status, I will say that measures have been taken by the bus company to ensure Merrimack parents that this will not happen again with this driver,” Matt Shevenell, business director for the Merrimack School District told the Union Leader.

“I’m not sure if I can elaborate, but I can say that she is not driving for us anymore,” he said.

Shevenell stressed that the incident occurred during Brown’s morning safety check, before she started out on her route to pick up students.

“It was a pre-run safety check,” Shevenell said. “If you leave one of your children inside of the bus with the bus running, clearly it is not a good idea.”
