SOUTH BEND, Ind. – An Indiana high school student was reportedly suspended this week for posting racist remarks about teachers on Facebook.

A teacher at South Bend Community School Corporation’s Washington High School told ABC 57 News that a student was suspended for a racist Facebook post stemming from an incident in class involving the student’s cell phone case.

District officials wouldn’t discuss the details, but district spokeswoman Susan Coney issued a statement about the ordeal.

“There was an incident today at Washington High School where a student made unacceptable and intolerable comments on Facebook,” Coney wrote. “The school administration and Corporation do not and will not condone this kind of behavior and language used by the student.

“The student is facing disciplinary action.”

According to a screen grab of the Facebook post by ABC 57, the unidentified student wrote:

For the last time to all you (expletive) teachers at Washington I’m not taking my phone case off so get it out of your head … thanks appreciate it

The news site reports the student used the n-word to describe teachers in the post.

“It make no sense and I don’t understand,” 2006 Washington High grad Whitney Humphrey, a black woman, told ABC 57. “That hurts me and it hurts the school system, as well.”

“If she knew what that world actually meant, she would go back and say, ‘Oops! I’m sorry,’” Humphrey said. “She thinks the ‘N-word’ is considered to be the same as ‘Afro-American’ and it’s not.”

The student deleted their Facebook account in the wake of the controversy. News reports did not detail when or where the student posed the derogatory Facebook message, or teachers’ concerns with her cell phone case.

The incident in South Bend follows similar race-charged social media controversies in public schools in recent weeks.Studen reports.

A Twitter account registered to the same student posted comments with the hashtag #RaceWarWeek.

“After more than 80 likes and 37 responses on Instagram, the post and the associated Instagram account were taken down,” according to the news site.

“School officials would not comment on the punishment handed out as a result.”

Decatur High’s principal, Thomas Zimmer, held an assembly with students after the incident to chastise them about media coverage of the episode.

“There we are on the front page,” he said, according to an audio recording obtained by the news site.

“That we’re racist. That the white kids in this building are racist. That the black kids in this building are racist and the latino kids in this building are racist and the Asian kids in this building are racist and we’re all racist,” Zimmer said.

“You can’t be put there tweeting stupid stuff. You can’t be out there Facebooking stupid stuff. Because the rest of the world sees that,” he said.
