CLERMONT, Fla. – A book written by Andrea Clemens detailing her painful personal story of sexual abuse at the hands of her teacher is now available.

Clemens’ account sheds light on a significant problem in American schools and one that is rarely addressed by the national media. EAGnews reported in December a minimum of 740 cases occurred in 2014.

That’s one reason why Clemens decided to write her book Invisible Target, which sheds light on the issue.

Since freeing herself from a sexually abusive teacher, Clemens has dedicated her life to educating others on the topic. She is a member of the speaker’s bureau for S.E.S.A.M.E., an organization dedicated to preventing the sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment of students by teachers and school staff.

She is also an instructor with the KidSafe Foundation, which is a non-profit organization committed to preventing child sexual abuse, bullying and internet dangers by educating children, parents, and professionals who work with children.

Now she hopes Invisible Target will not only recount her own story, but more importantly educate others on the issue.

Invisible Target is more than a memoir. With thought-provoking questions at the close of each chapter, this book serves as a strong educational tool for students, parents, teachers, and administrators by shedding light on the dynamics of educator sexual abuse so that school can be a safe haven for every child,” Clemens says, according to a press release.

Unfortunately, many people are unaware of what the grooming process a sexual predator uses looks like until it might be too late. It took Andrea many years to overcome the manipulation of her former teacher, not to mention the emotional problems that followed.

She wants to help stop the abuse before it starts by educating those at risk with her book.

“’I’ve shared by story and spoken about educator sexual abuse for over ten years, and I feel blessed that I now have the opportunity to reach a larger audience with the release of Invisible Target,’ explained Clemens. ‘This book needs to be in the hands of students, parents, teachers and administrators, so that together we can keep our children safe.’”

School should be a place where students can go learn without having to worry about their teacher trying to take advantage of them. Sexual predators do not always seem like such at first, but Clemens’ book can at the very least raise awareness among parents and students so they can recognize a red flag before something goes too far.

“Andrea Clemens has written a courageously honest book about her experience of being the target of a teacher sexual predator. She lets the reader see how predators work and shares the often contradictory emotions and responses that those who are abused experience. But more than that, she takes us through her journey of awareness, anger, and empowerment. We see how hard it is, and we see her triumph. Hers is not a rare story,” says Charol Shakeshaft, Ph.D., Professor, School of Education, Virginia Commonwealth University.

“What is rare is that Ms. Clemens is willing to tell it without holding back or simplifying the complexity of emotions and responses. This book can help students identify predators, parents to support their children, and educators to prevent abuse.”
