OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Police believe a Mid-Del city school bus driver was high on drugs when he allegedly crashed into five cars and a railroad bridge after dropping students off to school.

No students were on the bus, but several people were left with serious injuries after 58-year-old Odis Pitts allegedly careened down S.E. 15th Street in southeast Oklahoma City around 8 a.m. Monday, crashing into vehicles along his way, KFOR reports.

“Before officers could get on the scene … the school bus had struck five separate cars in five different accidents,” Oklahoma City Police Lt. Rod Strecker told the news site.

Sgt. Jennifer Wardlow told NewsOK Pitts initially hit two vehicles near Interstate 35, and continued on S. Stonewall Avenue, where he rear-ended a Jaguar and pushed it into traffic. The car struck a pick-up head-on, resulting in a “significant injuries” including a possible pelvic fracture, she said.

Wardlow said the bud then rear-ended a dump truck before heading off the road, up a 45 degree embankment, and crashing into a train bridge.

“There’s nothing good about this at all,” Zach Frost, a witness who attempted to help those at the scene, told KFOR.

“Police confirmed at least one person has a serious neck injury and another person may have had their hand amputated in one of the crashes,” according to the news site.

Pitts was unconscious at the scene and transported to the hospital, before heading to jail. He was charged with one count of driving under the influence of drugs, three counts of leaving the scene of an accident, and one count of leaving the scene of an injury accident.

District officials issued a statement about the crashes with very few details.

“One of our Mid-Del buses was involved in an accident this morning. No students were on the bus at the time of the accident,” officials said. “We are currently investigating the incident at this time. Our thoughts are with the families of those involved in today’s accident.”

District spokeswoman Stacey Boyer told News OK Bitts had been employed with the school system since the 2011-12 school year. She also said “no safety problems were reported by the students who were transported” by Pitts Monday morning.

Pitts has a prior misdemeanor conviction for a 2004 assault and battery, but he cleared the school district’s pre-employment criminal history search because the district only considers felony convictions, News OK reports.

Several surveillance cameras from area business caught footage of the out-of-control bus heading down S.E. 15th Street, News 9 reports.

“The first thing I saw was just ambulances going through Southeast 15th one after another,” store clerk Teresa Estrada said. “Cops and firefighters.”

At least one customer came in and said “the bus was speeding” and “driving crazy,” Estrada said.

Claudia Montiel received a call from her husband, who was trapped under his overturned pick-up, she told News 9.

“I don’t know how I made it to the scene. I was really shaky, I was really nervous,” Montiel said, adding that her husband was not badly injured.

“I am amazed,” she said. “Nothing. Just a few scratches, his eye. I’m glad, I’m very happy and thankful.”

Montiel’s husband, Jose Acosta, said he was surprised the crash wasn’t worse.

“All I remember seeing is two small cars in front of me, already crushed and stopped, and I saw the bus pass by real fast speeding. After that, that’s when I braked, the small car hit me and that’s when I flipped,” he said.

“It’s a miracle that I came out of it,” Acosta told News 9. “You can see my truck is totaled and there’s nothing left of it. It’s a miracle I’m still standing.”
