GRANT, Mich. – A former Michigan high school teacher faces up to two years in prison after she pleaded guilty to carrying on a lesbian relationship with a student that evolved out of thousands of text messages.

Erin Katherine MacDonald, 26, taught science at Grant High School until last fall, when the father of a female student at the school came across her car at a park and ride near M-37 and M-46 the week before Thanksgiving, WZZM 13 reports.

The girl told her parents she went to the movies with friends, but the father waited until she returned to her vehicle, and watched as MacDonald dropped her off. Suspicious of the relationship, the father then took the teen’s car keys and cell phone, and turned the latter over to school officials for review, according to the new site.

“It was discovered there were approximately 14,000 texts between Erin MacDonald and (the victim) from Oct. 25 until Nov. 21,” Newaygo County Sheriff’s Deputy Phillip Green wrote in an search warrant affidavit, WZZM 13 reports. “Through briefly reviewing some of the texts, it would lead … to believe there was an inappropriate relationship.”

The news station reports the texting amounted to roughly one text every three minutes. Put another way, if the two texted 24 hours per day, it would have equated to about 24 texts per hour.

MacDonald resigned her position after the victim told police the two had “an emotional and intimate relationship … which included sexual conduct,” according to the news site.

Grant Public Schools officials accepted MacDonald’s resignation in November, when they also issued a statement to parents.

“Due to the nature of the allegations, we immediately placed the teacher on paid administrative leave,” superintendent Johnathan Whan said in the statement quoted by WZZM. “During our investigation, the teacher came to us with a resignation, which we accepted.

“As a district, we work hard to provide our students with a safe and respectful learning environment focused on the academic needs of our students and to be fair and respectful to staff,” he continued. “We act immediately on these kinds of allegations as part of that commitment while providing due process for our staff.”

MacDonald pleaded guilty to two counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct as part of a plea deal that dismissed four other charges, including two 15-year felonies, according to the news site.

The fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct charge carries a sentence of up to two years in prison.

MacDonald is scheduled to be sentenced May 4.

“We share information with the community, staff, students and parents to keep them informed of what had happened,” Whan told WZZM. “And we started working as a community to move forward.”
