MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Milwaukee Teacher Education Association (MTEA) and other labor allies actually rallied against an education reform at a school with a 0.0% reading proficiency level.

The Wednesday afternoon rally at Auer Avenue School in Milwaukee was part of a campaign to increase awareness and rally support for MPS amidst a state proposal that would allow an appointed commissioner to take over three to five failing MPS schools each year.

The school chosen for the rally is one of the 55 failing schools in MPS, and actually features a shocking 0.0% reading proficiency for all grades.

“If the teacher’s union was as focused on the kids as they are in fighting reform, Auer’s reading proficiency wouldn’t be zero percent,” Sen. Alberta Darling said, “Even if the unions are giving up on schools like Auer, I won’t.”

“Our objective is to provide opportunities,” Rep. Dale Kooyenga said, “It doesn’t matter if Auer turns around thanks to our reforms or from internal reforms, they must start teaching children to read.”

The Opportunity School District program was inserted into the state budget at the Joint Finance Committee last week.
