CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Police allege a Texas 13-year-old threatened to kill her classmates on Instagram in hopes of gaining followers on the social media site.

The Dallas Morning News reports police arrested a female student at T.W. Browne Middle School and charged her with a third-degree felony for making a terroristic threat over a post to Instagram that was accompanied by a picture of a black man aiming a shotgun at the camera.

The post read:

Everybody at t.w Browne gone die omm plus u stupid ass eight graders wanna play with me IMA kill everybody even 6graders and 7graders..this is no joke I put that oml I got a rape charge on me and I’m ready to go back to the pen ..

The student, who was not named because she’s a juvenile, faces up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

“I want students to know there’s a reaction to this, and if you’re caught, you’re going to be charged with a crime,” Dallas Independent School District police Chief Craig Miller said.

School officials noticed the post Monday night and beefed up security the next day but did not evacuate or lock down the school. Police struggled to track down who authored the post because it was shared several times. When they allegedly identified the student, she told police she found the image in a Google search, and shared to gain followers, Miller said.

“They won’t let the children leave, and say they’re safer here, which is kind of like ‘I don’t think so,’ but ok, I have to take it at that,” T.W. Browne parent Tamar Gibbs told Fox 4 Tuesday.

“I seen it and I was like wait a minute, I have two babies who go there and nobody took the time out to call us,” another parent said.

Other parents removed their kids from the school and complained to the news site about a lack of communication from the district.

Miller told the Morning News authorities believe the student involved may have sent the post from another student’s phone, so a second student may also face criminal charges in the ordeal.

“We are not going to tolerate this,” he said. “We have to set an example.”

The tough stance against student threats comes after a series of similar incidents at other area schools.

The same day as the T.W. Browne incident, officials at Boles Junior High in South Arlington were investigating a message scrawled on a bathroom stall that read “Get Ready. Shooting all n****s” and stipulated the attack would start at 1:30, Wednesday, Dec. 2, CBS DFW reports.

South Arlington school officials also declined to close the campus to avoid the threat, and parents there seemed satisfied with that decision.

“Do I pull them out of school every time threat like this comes up and risk them losing a part of their education?” one parent questioned. “Or, do I continue to leave them in school and wait to find out what happens from the media? It’s a tough call to make.”
