CHESTERFIELD, Mo. – If a school district has $242,074 to spare, how do you think the money should be spent?

On books or computers? Or perhaps the district should hire a few more teachers, or provide raises for a few of the better educators already on staff?

But those dollars went to travel in the Parkway, Missouri school district in 2015-17.

The district had 361 credit card transactions for a total of $152,684,87 at hotels around the state and nation between July 2016 and June 2017, according to information obtained through a public information request.

It also had 848 transactions for $89,389.88 with restaurants and catering services.

That adds up to $242,074.75.

Many of the hotel bills were pretty huge.

There was a single transaction for $11,000 at an Embassy Suites (no location listed). There were single transactions at the Fairfield Inn and Suites in Columbia, Missouri for $3,529.76, a Doubletree in Oakbrook, Illinois for $3,755.67, and a Residence Inn in Columbia, Missouri for $3,445.90.

There were several occasions when the district had multiple transactions at the same hotel on the same day. That list includes the Drury Palace in Chesterfield, Missouri ($12,960, three transactions), the Residence Inn Addison in Dallas ($7,909.54, 29 transactions); the Holiday Inn Express in Columbia ($4,670.40, 16 transactions); and another at the Holiday Inn Express in Columbia ($3,035.76, 21 transactions).

The big hotel tabs in Columbia are curious because it’s only about an hour and a half drive from Chesterfield – – the school’s home city. Couldn’t the travelers have attended to their business and driven home?

Some of the restaurant/catering tabs were also pretty incredible.

The list included Connie’s Pizza in Chicago ($3,030.30), Laredo in Washington, D.C. ($2,730.32), a Golden Corral at an unspecified location ($1,511.72), Spiro’s in West Chesterfield, Missouri ($1,237.50), Moe’s Southwest Grill at an unspecified location ($1,237), Callier’s Catering ($1,192.90), The Shack in Chesterfield, Missouri ($936), Chipotle at an unspecified location ($923.25), Lee’s Famous Recipe at an unspecified location ($897.24), Catering Your Way by Lisa ($832), and Chris’s Cakes in St. Louis ($734.18).

There were also three transactions on the same day at Jason’s Deli totaling $2,382.17 and four transactions on the same day at Firehouse Subs totaling $1,343.55).
