COATESVILLE, Pa. – Two local Coatesville school officials abruptly ‘retired’ from their positions recently after a district IT staffer discovered racist texts between the two and reported the lewd messages to the school board.

Chester County District Attorney Thomas Hogan confirmed an ongoing criminal investigation into inappropriate text messages exchanged between school personnel at Coatesville Area School District, but will not identify the participants or contents of the texts, Philly.com reports.

The school board, however, is slated to vote today on whether to accept the resignations of Superintendent Richard Como and high school athletic director Jim Donato, both of whom abruptly resigned shortly after the start of the school year, according to media reports.

The texts between Como and Donato occurred this summer, but were not discovered until Aug. 15, when a school IT employee was transferring data to Donato’s new device, reports the Daily Local News, which secured a copy of the messages from anonymous sources.

“More disturbingly, the sources said the school board was made aware of the text messages and was prepared to allow Como and Donato to remain in their positions until the transcripts were leaked to the Chester County District Attorney’s Office, prompting a criminal investigation,” the news site reports.

In the texts, the two discussed black teachers and students in the district while referring to them using the “n” word. They also used racial slurs  to describe contestants in the Miss USA pageant, Arabs and Jews, according to The Raw Story.

Here is the wording of some of the texts, according to the Daily Local News.

“All should just have whatever first names they want…then last name is N—-R!,” Donato wrote to Como. “Leroy N—-r, Preacher N—-r, Night train n—-r, clarence n—-r, Latoya n—-r, Thelma n—-r and so on.”

“Great idea!” Como responded. “Joe n—-r bill n—-r snake n—-r got a nice ring to it.”

The conversation did not end there, as Como and Donato continued to use the slur as they discussed students.

“Could have whole homerooms of n—-r!” Como wrote.

“Hahahahaha!” Donato responded. “Will N—-r report to the office, pardon the interruption but will n—-r report to nurses office. N—-r to lunch now!”

Other texts were even more grotesque. After meetings with the school district’s senior administrative staff and school board members, Como announced Aug. 28 he was retiring because of an exchange of inappropriate text messages, the Daily Local News reports.

Days later, Donato resigned, as well.

Ironically, the story broke the same day the local NAACP chapter celebrated its 75^th anniversary. Coatesville area NAACP president Tonya Thames Taylor is also a school board member. She has requested the NAACP play a role in recruiting the district’s next superintendent.

School officials have declined to comment on the lewd texts or the conduct of those accused, who remain under investigation by law enforcement and school district authorities.
