LANCASTER, Pa. – A Manor Township, Pennsylvania resident is taking the state’s teachers union and its sponsored lawmakers to task over their claims about political spending and union dues collection.

Bruce E. Garner wrote to Lancaster Online to set the record straight about paycheck protection – stopping the practice of government collecting dues for unions. Garner cited a recent Susquehanna Polling & Research survey that showed 80 percent of the public and 75 percent of union households don’t think government should collect dues for public-sector unions, according to Lancaster Online.

“Perhaps it’s the public’s overwhelming opposition to using taxpayer funds to collect government worker dues that has caused union leaders and legislators that receive union money to make false claims to the press,” Garner wrote.

The vigilant citizen highlighted the utterly false statements made by union leaders, as well as Pennsylvania state Rep. Mike Sturla, that union dues are not used for political purposes.

“The proof that claim is false is found in the full-page ad attacking Gov. Tom Corbett’s policies on education that appeared last week in this paper. It clearly stated it was paid for by the American Federation of Teachers,” Garner wrote.

“Since it was not a direct contribution to a candidate, that full-page bashing of Gov. Corbett is considered issue advocacy and can be paid for by union dues. However, that full page ad was certainly political.”

Garner then proceeded to pull Rep. Sturla’s pants down in public.

“The technical distinction that Rep. Sturla is hiding behind is that PAC funds, not dues, are used to directly fund candidates. Why does Rep. Sturla care so much about this distinction? Using data from followthemoney.org, the single largest contribution to his campaign is $58,750 from (the Pennsylvania State Education Association), and overall, public sector unions contributed $131,000 to his campaign,” Garner wrote.

“Based upon these examples, there is no question that union dues fund politics whether or not public sector union leaders or legislators that receive union campaign contributions want to be truthful and admit it. Isn’t it time for public sector unions to collect their own dues?”
