BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – The unions always scream when school boards decide to outsource for transportation services and lay off union bus drivers.

But having non-union support staff is not a bad idea in public schools, for several different reasons. The employees are not as expensive, and they can be dumped at the blink of an eye

We certainly hope the bus driver in Broward County, Florida who reportedly abandoned a student when he was having a medical seizure is not a union member.

If reports about his conduct are true, he deserves to be fired, and the school district shouldn’t have to pay a dime to get rid of him.

A 16-year-old boy, Andrew Shepard, started having a diabetic seizure on his school bus recently, according to a news report from TheCelebrityCafe.com

His sister, Jazmen Lucas, was also on the bus and noticed her brother struggling.

Lucas says she asked the male driver to take them home right away, but the driver refused and told them they would have to get off the bus, according to the news report.

The kids were dropped off at their normal bus stop, and Shepard collapsed several times trying to walk, according to the report. His sister called their mother, then called for emergency help. The boy had a dangerously low blood sugar level when the ambulance arrived, the report said.

The children’s mother, identified as only “Cynthia,” was outraged later, after her son completely recovered.

“He can die,” she said. “He can go into a diabetic coma and die. (The bus driver is) a coward. He let my son get off this bus and left my son pretty much to die. If my daughter was not there, my son would not be here today.”

If the facts as stated by the children are true, this driver should obviously be fired immediately. Never again should he be responsible for the safety of children.

Unfortunately, even if the account is true, the driver could be a legal problem for the school district for some time.

If he’s a union member, he will be guaranteed legal assistance and a “due process” of hearings and appeals which can take a long time and cost schools a great deal in legal bills.

If he’s non-union and conducted himself as reported, the company that contacts with the school district for transportation services can simply fire him, with no heavy cost or time wasted.

The unions don’t talk about cases like these when they insist that all school jobs be filled with union members.
