BUNNELL, Fla. – Some children in one Florida school district will soon be getting all three meals of the day at school – free of charge.

On Tuesday, the Flagler County school board voted unanimously to have all six of their elementary schools participate in the federal government’s “Afterschool Meals Program,” MyNews13.com reports.

The Afterschool Meal Program is part of the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010, a federal law that’s championed by First Lady Michelle Obama.

Flagler schools’ dinner program is an extension of the district’s afterschool snack program – another federally funded initiative – in which low-income children who are enrolled in “extended” school day programs are given a nutritious snack.

Flagler school leaders hope that by replacing the snack with a hot meal, “even more working parents will enroll their children in after-school programs to take advantage of a dinner,” MyNews13.com adds.

Providing hot dinnertime meals to qualifying Flagler students will cost U.S. taxpayers at least $382,000. Flagler students from low-income families already receive free breakfasts and lunches at school – at taxpayers’ expense, of course.

According to progressives and social justice activists, affluent Americans have a moral obligation to give poor kids three square meals a day in school. (Why the feds’ food stamp program does not shrink in proportion to the growth of the free school meals program remains a mystery.)

What progressives don’t say is that turning schools into restaurants is a key component in their effort to fundamentally transform the U.S.

Think about it: “Extended” school days means activist educators will have more time to train the impressionable children in the causes they care deeply about, such as extreme environmentalism and “equality.”

Also, by providing these children with free meals – a practice that’s being extended into the summer months – an entire generation of Americans is being trained to think it’s perfectly natural and normal for the government to provide for all of their needs.

In other words, the left is using public schools to create a beachhead for their socialistic agenda.

A few more obvious reasons for the “schools as soup kitchens” scheme: It allows busybody bureaucrats to largely control what kids are eating (a major battle in the “war on obesity”) and it financially benefits the left-wing labor unions whose members staff, clean and maintain the school cafeterias.
