EL PASO, Texas – On one hand, we all hate to see any kids grow up without an education, regardless of their circumstances.

But public education costs taxpayers money. And taxpayers fork over their bucks to educate American students, period.

But our dollars are being used to educate kids from many countries in Texas, due to a court ruling that prohibits public school districts from inquiring about any student’s immigration status, according to KFOXTV.com.

In El Paso County, officials know they have many illegal immigrants in their student population, but have no way to know exactly how many. And it seems as though they don’t care too much, because every kid – legal or not – brings in $5,541 in state aid from Austin.

“Any student that resides within El Paso County, it is our honor and our duty to educate them in our schools” Melissa Martinez, a spokesperson for the El Paso school district.

That may be all well and good for the school district and its employees, but taxpayers throughout Texas, and indeed throughout the U.S., have to cough up money to create the fund that reimburses schools for each student. That means taxpayers across the state and nation are being forced to fund the education of children who come from other nations.

Shouldn’t we at least be allowed to bill their homeland governments for the cost of their schooling? Or perhaps deduct the cost from the foreign aid we send those nations?

While no decent person would ever want to toss any child out of a classroom, it’s an undeniable fact that this is yet another policy that encourages and promotes illegal immigration.

If people can come to the U.S. illegally, and still work, secure social service assistance, obtain drivers licenses and enroll their children in school for free, why wouldn’t they?

Of course the children of illegal immigrants are victims. They didn’t ask to come here or be born here. And we have to assume that many of the thousands of young illegal immigrants pouring across the border on their own fled desperate conditions in their native countries.

But American taxpayers are also victims. They already pay for food, clothing, shelter, medical care and education for millions of American kids whose parents are too poor (and many too unmotivated) to contribute. Now they are expected to dig deeper into their pockets and support foreign children, just because the federal government lacks the resolve to properly regulate our Mexican border.

No wonder the citizens of our southwest states are so angry these days.
