ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A mother of a Taft Middle School girl faces criminal charges after she allegedly cheered her daughter on during a fight outside the school Tuesday.

Nicole Morlan, 34, faces felony charges of child abuse and contributing to the delinquency of a minor stemming from a cell phone video in which police allege she is heard egging her daughter on during a schoolyard brawl, the Albuquerque Journal reports.

“The parent is seen and heard encouraging her daughter to fight, and is not taking any action to stop the fight,” Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Aaron Williamson told the news site.

The video shows a teacher attempted to break up the fight, but was hit in the process and dragged to the ground. Meanwhile, Morlan is seen moving among students who gathered to watch the brawl.

“Ms. Morlan is heard cheering in the background of the altercation,” according to the police report cited by the Journal.

The police report shows the two girls had argued earlier in the day as part of an “ongoing problem,” KOAT reports.

Obey Faith Chavez, Morlan’s daughter posted about the fight on Facebook, according to Metro.co.uk.

Morlan was teaching the teen how to stand up for herself – “a lesson that I’ll never forget,” Chavez posted.

In addition to the criminal charges, Morlan was banned from school property for the rest of the school year, KOAT reports.

Williamson said investigators are still looking into the details of the fight and plan to forward a report to the district attorney’s office for review.

Many parents who viewed the video were shocked that Morlan didn’t step in to help the teacher.

“Pathetic!” Melody Hartzer Ferneau posted to Facebook.

“This mom needs to cheer her daughter on when she gets good grades, not when she’s fighting,” Linda Klaushie posted. “We don’t need more New Mexico children dumbing down.”

“Disgusting behavior!” Michelle Renee added.
