CONCORD, N.H. – During the New Hampshire House Education Committee hearing yesterday, Democratic Rep. Mel Myler criticized the large number of parents who have emailed him in support of SB101.

The bill clarifies that Common Core national standards are not mandated in the state and school districts are free to adopt their own.

“I’m tired of receiving emails that are misinformed, that have wrong information. Much of the information that has come forward has been answered.

“Some don’t like the answers. But those are the answers!”

He added, “There is no problem (with Common Core)! Change is difficult. It is not easy to move from one strand to another strand.”

He made it clear he would be voting against the bill.

“I was shocked to hear the statements from Rep. Myler at today’s hearing,” Ann Marie Banfield, a parent who has been fighting against the Common Core national standards initiative, tells EAGnews.

“We had parents from across New Hampshire write and testify in support of SB101. They are seeing the confusing Common Core math and feel helpless against this nationwide reform. It is disappointing to hear elected representatives rebuke public comments and patronize parents who see first hand the damage this curriculum is having on their children.

“What kind of a message does it send to students and the large number of parents who took their time to attend the hearing and write e-mails when they hear that one of the members of the Committee is sick of hearing from them?”

Myler’s indifference to parental concerns shouldn’t be surprising.

Prior to running for office, he worked for teachers unions in California, Michigan and New Hampshire for 40 years, according to Concord Patch.
