LOS LUNAS, N.M. – Two Los Lunas High School seniors were suspended during their finals week after defying orders not to ride their horses to school for “No Vehicle to School Day.”

A.J. Sauceda and Clayton Torres trotted their horses to campus before school Thursday and rode the animals around for 10 to 15 minutes before taking them home and returning to school, KRQE reports.

But when they returned, school officials told them they’re suspended until Monday, because they were previously warned against riding their horses to school.

“Some kids brought scooters, four-wheelers, bikes, skateboards,” Sauceda told KRQE. “We don’t really ride bikes or scooters. We ride horses, so we brought horses.”

Clayton said he was “shocked” by the suspension.

So was A.J.’s mother, Leannah Sauceda, who took her frustrations up with school officials.

She contends the boys didn’t do anything wrong.

“They said, ‘well, they’re being suspended,’ and I said, ‘for what grounds? Did they damage anything, hurt anybody?'” Leannah Sauceda told KOB 4.

“They said, ‘no, they’re being suspended for today and tomorrow. I said, ‘they’re seniors, they have finals.’ He said, ‘I don’t care, they need to be removed … immediately,'” Leannah Sauceda said.

Officials told the media the students will have an opportunity to make up their missed exams.

Regardless, Leannah Sauceda told KRQE she doesn’t believe her son and Torres deserve a two-day suspension when other more concerning senior pranks go unpunished.

“There’s been chickens let out the beginning of the week, and in the school property, in the school cafeteria,” she said. “There was over 100 crickets let out in the school.”

“They’re doing this over what?” Sauceda questioned about her son’s suspension. “They’re making this decision for something that’s so incredibly petty. It’s stupid.”

School security director Desi Garcia told KRQE the teens were suspended because horses are not safe around students, and the boys were warned against senior pranks. The district superintendent declined to discuss the issue with KOAT because of “privacy laws.”

Many people online thought that rationale was silly.

“I’m not seeing how this is a senior prank. Sounds to me like they took the theme of the day seriously and are being punished for it,” CallousOneToo posted to KRQE. “Being that Los Lunas is rural-ish I think riding horses to school or work shouldn’t be a problem.”

“I agree,” Tommy wrote. “It is also strange that no Los Lunas school officials commented on video in the news broadcast. When has anybody heard of a horse being dangerous on school property? Who made the decision that a horse is dangers to other students in Los Lunas? The horse on the video seemed very tame to me.”
