LANSING, Ill. – A former band teacher accused of spreading oil intended for musical instruments on a school’s stairs has had a misdemeanor charge dropped.

Thornton Fractional South band director Michael Madonia, who resigned after the alleged incident, received a “directed verdict” from Judge Thomas Brewer last week, The Times reports.

The paper reports:

The incident in question occurred last year in May at the high school when district officials accused Madonia of allegedly pouring oil used for musical instruments all over two sets of stairs, making them slick.

At the time, District 215 Superintendent Creg Williams told The Times the act was explained to him as being a prank, but created a hazard for anyone who might have had to use those stairs.

District officials at the time had a video from a security camera allegedly depicting Madonia pouring oil down the stairs.

Williams told The Times Madonia immediately offered his resignation when confronted by school officials.

T.F. South Principal Judy Whalen said Friday evening no one was hurt, because an administrator noticed the stairs were slick just before students were about to change classes.

“I’m very disappointed with the way this turned out,” she said. “We had video evidence. He was still able to get out of what he did.”

The verdict essentially cleared the teacher of a misdemeanor charge of reckless conduct, according to the paper.
