SICKLERVILLE, N.J. – Twin sisters Kylie and Karlie were a bit off this week, and it got one of them suspended from school.

Fox 29 didn’t identify the girls or their mother Crystal by last name, but reports Kylie was threatened with suspension from Winslow Township School 4 on Monday because the shirt she wore to school was the wrong shade of green.

The school’s dress code policy states that students must wear white, dark green or navy blue shirts or blouses with collars only. That’s important because “school attire can influence a pupil’s behavior and potentially impact the academic environment,” the dress code states, according to Newsday.

Kylie’s shirt was Kelly green, which prompted the vice principal to call Crystal with a threatening message.

“He wanted me to know that she can’t wear that shirt and if she does wear that shirt again, she would be suspended,” Crystal told the news site.

Another parent told Fox 29 their 2nd grade grandson was suspended for wearing the wrong shade of blue, even though it was the same shirt he wore the previous school year.

“I said, well it was my fault, I bought the shirts. I was assuming that the same shirts they wore last year were okay this year,” the unidentified woman said.

Crystal said she had a heated argument with the principal and vice principal about the strict shirt enforcement.

“My child messed up, I messed it up for my child, and she’d be suspended next time for it, but to suspend a child over a shade of a shirt. I found that a little ridiculous,” she said.

When Crystal returned to school on Tuesday with her two girls, who were properly dress but a “few minutes” late, the mother alleges the principal turned Kylie away.

“She told me don’t bother to sign her in and told Kylie that she’s not in school today,” Crystal said.

Kylie confirmed her mother’s story.

“I got suspended for wearing the different color they wanted me to wear,” she told Fox 29. “The principal told me that I don’t have to stay here and I could leave.”

School officials didn’t have much to say about the incident.

“We can confirm that there was a violation of the district’s uniform policy, but we can’t go into detail about the specific violation,” a district spokesperson told NJ.com Thursday.

The news site notes that the school dress code is enforced by administrators at each school and specifically calls for “one out of school suspension per infraction.”

A lot of folks sounded off about the school’s policy online.

“Well, if a kid shows up wearing flashing strobe lights with neon polka dots and electric zig-zaggy swirls that can, you know, cause seizures, and then swings around the room like a monkey, then yes, perhaps that would be overboard and worth a warning,” Miamia wrote. “But … it’s a lighter shade of green! They’re eight years old! If such ‘attire’ has that much of an influence and negative impact on this school’s ‘academic environment,’ I’d seriously question the priorities and what kind of teaching/learning is really going on.”

“I can understand a ‘dress code’, I’m all for it, but, come on, a shade of green gets you kicked out? I could understand if it was a gang color green, but, to me, I could hardly tell the difference,” chriss03 commented. “I guess when a petty minded person get to wield unlimited power, this is what you get.”

“Suspension for a one time infraction seems too strong. If there’s a willful pattern, after a warning or two, no problem,” BatterUp opined.

“Only in NJ do school administrators have their eyes on the real issues in public education,” fredp0444 added.
