MCALESTER, Okla. – An Oklahoma school superintendent faces scrutiny after the McAlester News-Capital revealed she used the district credit card to purchase “Hillary 2016” gear and other questionable items.

A review of receipts for McAlester Public Schools Superintendent Marsha Gore by the news site shows Gore purchased the Hillary 2016 merchandise at a Washington, D.C. airport in November, although she may have reimbursed the district.

“A receipt for Hillary 2016 and ‘Hillary Slant’ merchandise from Washington D.C. is dated Nov. 20, 2014. Two receipts were issued for purchases from the same store on the same day,” according to the news site. “The receipt with the four items containing ‘Hillary’ in the description totaled $41.08. A handwritten note on the receipt says ‘Marsha Gore check $41.08,’ but Gore declined to comment on whether it was one of the receipts included in her reimbursement to the school district.”

Gore, in fact, declined to comment on any of her questionable purchases.

But school spending records obtained by the News-Capital through public information requests show the superintendent charged more than $4,500 to the district’s “Central Office Calendar Account” between May 2014 and May 2015.

The Calendar Account is not reviewed by the school board as closely as other travel expense accounts, according to the news site.

“The News-Capital commenced an investigation into district finances in early September following Gore’s reassignment of former MPS Business Manager/’Treasurer Brent Grilliot and the hiring of outside financial consultant and treasurer Paula Crawford,” the site reports. “Some of the purchase card expenditures occurred during out-of-state travel.”

Other purchased questioned by the News-Capital include bereavement flowers sent to a middle school principal, a car battery that was purchased tax free then reimbursed by Gore, as well as numerous meal reimbursements – for everything from district catered meetings to out-of-town dinners.

“Some of the meal receipts are from out of town; $43.36 at Catfish Cove and $44.04 at Red Lobster in Fort Smith in May 2015, $47.99 at P.F. Chang’s in Tulsa in March 2015, $40.59 at Carabba’s in Tulsa in June of 2014 and more,” the News-Capital reports.

“Some of the meal receipts show restaurants in town – for groups as well as what appear to be individual meals. Locations include McDonalds, Whistle Stop Bistro, Taco Bob’s, Lucy Two’s and more. Total food expenditures for Gore exceed $1,000 in one year alone.”

The superintendent also seemed to have went on a shopping spree to decorate her husband’s workspace at the district bus barn.

Receipts show she bought hundreds of dollars in decorations from Hobby Lobby, Yellow Gazebo, Common Roots Mercantile, Harper add Grey House, among others for a total of about $900.

Some of Gore’s purchases were accompanied by receipts allegedly showing she reimbursed the district for the purchases, others were not.

Gore has ignored the news site’s request to comment on the purchases, to explain exactly how she’s using local tax dollars, but has been an outspoken proponent of keeping the current tax levels in place for local schools.

“In July, Gore voiced her support for the quarter-cent sales tax currently in place that benefits MPS,” according to the News-Capital. “She spoke out against the city’s proposition to repurpose the tax to benefit city street projects starting in 2018.”

“As superintendent of McAlester Public Schools, I would not support that,” she said at the time, adding that the money could be used to “put a safe room in every school.”

The News-Capital into Gore’s spending habits comes amid a state bureau of investigation probe into alleged “white-collar crime” by an unidentified district employee.
