WALES, Wis. – Concerned parents sat in worry about reports of a stabbing at a local high school that were posted online as police descended on the school during a wrestling match and choir concert.

Lake Country Now reports police responded to Kettle Moraine High School late Thursday afternoon that was described on Facebook as a possible stabbing. The emergency turned out to be an attempted suicide by a staff member, but parents attending a choir concert and wrestling matches at the school said they were left to wonder about the commotion, WISN reports.

suicide“There’s the news. There’s the sheriffs, and our kids are in there, so it’s concerning,” parent Deeann Young, who attended her son’s Christmas program, told the news site. “They have systems where they an email you or alert you by text. I mean, we got nothing.”

School district officials, of course, refused to comment about the incident, and instead issued a statement on the high school’s website.

“At approximately 5 p.m. there was a medical emergency involving a staff member at Kettle Moraine High School,” the message reads, though it’s unclear when it was posted. “Emergency responders were called to the scene, the scene was secured, and the building is safe.”

“(I’m) concerned for the children,” parent Dennis Derkach, who also attended the performance, told WISN. “It’s a concert, and you want to make sure everybody is safe.”

It’s unclear how WISN confirmed the incident was a suicide, because the Waukesha County Sheriff would not confirm that’s the case.

“Waukesha County Sheriff Eric Severson said Thursday evening that the medical emergency involving a Kettle Moraine High School staff member was not a stabbing,” Lake Country Now reports. “Severson emphasized that state law prohibited him from disclosing any further details.”

A lack of details from police and school officials seems to be the norm in Kettle Moraine schools.

Earlier this month, Kettle Moraine High School social studies teacher Tammy Johnson was attending an after school meeting when she was escorted from the building and put on leave. Superintendent Pat DeKlotz and district attorney Kristi Foy confirmed the incident occurred, but refused to explain why.

“They declined to say whether Johnson is being paid and would not comment on the incident, calling it a confidential personnel matter,” the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

Several folks who commented online about the suicide incident expressed sympathy for the staff member.

“I feel for this person and what they must be going through to do something so extreme,” karma posted. “That being said, it’s a horrible thing to do at a school and sends a terrible message to kids who may be contemplating a way out of their troubles.”

“I am pretty sure the person who decided to take his/her life was not thinking about the message it would be sending to kids at school,” Gail Holcomb countered. “That person had to be so depressed and distraught that they would attempt suicide anywhere they could find a place to do it.”
