WASHINGTON, D.C. – Although nearly every state has signed on to Common Core, it looks like some might be second guessing the success of this federally-driven overhaul of education.

When Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin signed House Bill 3399 earlier this month repealing the one-size-fits-all standards, it might have been the most ironic moment in the Common Core battle thus far. As Chairwoman of the National Governors Association, Fallin essentially rejected her own organization’s initiative when she signed Oklahoma’s Common Core repeal bill.

In the same week Fallin signed HB 3399 in Oklahoma, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley signed a similar bill that would require the state to design its own standards for the 2015-2016 school year.

Many other states, including North Carolina, are also on their way to repeal Common Core.

EAG founder Kyle Olson writes at Foxnews.com:

Action in Oklahoma, South Carolina and North Carolina indicates the Common Core dam may be breaking.

In Louisiana, Gov. Bobby Jindal signed an executive order that requires his state to develop its own standards, and drops it out of the two main federally-funded testing consortia.

Missouri legislators have passed HB 1490, which would repeal Common Core in their state. It now sits on the desk of Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon.

In Ohio, activists are attempting to seize on the energy from the other states and recently held a rally at the statehouse. Some 300 people showed up…

…all of these states have something in common: Republican governors and Republican-dominated legislatures.

As parents and legislators begin to see the impacts of Common Core, one has to wonder why more states are not responding in the same way Oklahoma did. Are states too attached to the federal cash coming from Washington bureaucrats to truly act in the best interest of the students who are being taught under these sub-par standards?

It could be that, as Olson puts it, “they’re so hooked on federal money or so fearful of (or comfortable with) their Washington overlords that they wouldn’t dare raise a hackle.”
